Daily Classroom Schedule
Children arrive, unpack, and begin their morning work or Sustained Silent Reading.
Attendance and hot lunch count are taken.
Math: Math Workshop allows the children to use Pearson Math and a variety of hands on manipulatives to investigate math concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, geometry, fractions, measurement and time.
Reading: The Lucy Calkins' Reader's Workshop model is utilized. In addition children read in guided reading groups focusing on a variety of genres in fiction and nonfiction. Many author studies are mixed in throughout the year as well.
Handwriting: Children work on correct cursive letter formation using the Handwriting Without Tears program.
Writing: Children participate in the Writer's Workshop model with a variety of writing lessons including journal, poetry, narrative, persuasive and expository writing.
Lunch and Recess
Read aloud: Children listen to and discuss literature.
Spelling: Children learn spelling patterns as they spell words from their weekly spelling lists and review words from prior lessons.
Science: Children study the following science concepts: Animal Adaptations. Matter, Conservation, and Rocks and Minerals
Social Studies: Children study units on Communities, Landforms, Our World, and Our Country focusing on the community of Portland in the past, present & future.
